The tools used in construction are essential for completing projects of all sizes. One group of tools that contractors use every day are grinders. There are several different types of grinders to choose from, each serving a specific purpose. Three of the most common types of grinders are angle grinders, surface grinders, and die grinders. Each is discussed briefly below.

Angle

Commonly used for both construction and metalwork, the angle grinder is put to use when an end portion of installed materials needs to be ground down at an angle in order to fit properly. The grinder has a changeable disc that can be used for more than just a simple angle grind, however. The discs can be used for various jobs, including sanding, polishing, and even cutting. This grinder can work at an angle rather than just directly onto a flat surface, making them highly versatile construction tools.

Surface

Surface grinders are used in construction to provide a certain kind of finished surface on an object. Most surface grinders can work with materials like cast iron, steel, aluminum, brass, and plastic. There are different kinds of surface grinders, including peripheral, wheel face, and disc grinders. Peripheral grinding uses the flat edge of the wheel, wheel-face grinding uses a reciprocating table, and disc grinding uses more of the disc to create the needed surface.

Die

Die grinders get their name from their original purpose: grinding the precise shape of tool dies. This grinder is usually hand-held and resembles other rotary tools. In construction, these grinders are often used for finer sanding and polishing.

For a contractor, having the right tools for the job at hand is a necessity. Commonly used power tools in the construction industry include angle grinders, surface grinders, and die grinders. Each has its own purpose and design—angle for creating angles, surface for creating special surfaces, and die for fine sanding or polishing. Be sure to choose the right tool for your job.
